The Women’s Civic Club of Grove City is an organization rich in history whose philanthropic efforts benefit Grove City and the surrounding communities. On July 14, 1916, a group of 18 women organized an independent effort committed to civic betterment. On July 26, 1927, the organization was incorporated and became known as the Women’s Civic Club of Grove City, Ohio.
Early projects included: placing trash receptacles in the city, project “Clean Up Day,” a war garden project and making bandages for the WWI effort. One of the Club’s crowning achievements was the permanent establishment of a public reading room. Located in the Director’s Room of the First National Bank at the corner of Broadway and Columbus Street, the library formally opened in May 1917. Members worked various projects to finance the library and to keep the fire going until 1923. The Club also looked after the shut-ins, the sick and the poor in the community and also concentrated on self-improvement projects including book talks and debates. Today, the Women’s Civic Club continues to pursue its original goals and enrich the lives of those in our community. As a token of appreciation, the new Southwest Public Library's Grove City location, designated a room specifically to the club. Stop by the room to view Club archives and a short view of the Club's history. |
